While pool swimming is great for advancing technique and developing discipline, Open Water Swimming (OWS) is another world entirely. It's freeing in a number of ways (no competition for lane space, no opening-hours schedules to check, and no entry fees; the view is often incredible) but OWS comes with its own challenges.
Water temperature and quality are uncontrolled; there may be currents or sea life to contend with; the open-air "deck change" into dry clothes is a logistical concern in itself. Wetsuits are highly recommended for both warmth and buoyancy. However, once you fall in love with it, OWS leaves you feeling both serene and accomplished.
Private OWS lessons are available for swimmers who have mastered the basics of pool swimming.
